Posted at 12:41pm on Jul. 11, 2008 The RNC is Looking for Platform Suggestions
By Steve Foley
As the body politic continues its evolution, some things change and some stay the same. One thing that has been more or less relegated to the ash heap of history is the Party Platform. it's a relic of a bygone age when principles and policy stances had meaning and one could glean a fairly accurate sense of the parties motives and direction.
That day, I'm sorry to report, is gone! Not that I think there isn't a place for the party platform, on the contrary, I think over simplified talking points look great on the party's website! I just don't think members, especially elected ones, are paying them much attention anymore!
Well, imagine my surprise as I opened my email this morning to find a letter from the the RNC encouraging me to visit a new website and participate in crafting the platform for the next four years! Did you catch that? The next four years? I wonder if that was intentional? more on that down article.
The site is gopplatform2008.com and is put together by what the RNC is calling the Republican Platform Committee:
Welcome to the most grassroots-driven platform development effort in the history of American politics!

MORNING UPDATE:
McCAIN TALKS JOBS IN MICHIGAN...in a Town Hall meeting in Belleville. Do you remember how Obama said he would meet John McCain anytime, anywhere at these Town Hall meetings...you know, earlier, when he was seeking the nomination. Now he refuses to engage in these discussions. Hypocrisy and/or flip flop...again.

Posted at 3:28pm on Jul. 10, 2008 Alaska Corruption Investigation: Another One Bites the Dust UPDATE
By Achance
The Public Integrity Section dropped another indictment today. This time they reached into the State Senate. The story is here: http://www.adn.com/news/politics/fbi/story/460986.html
Sen. Cowdry is an old and sick man with a family, so he's probably "cooperating" with the FBI. The indictment is linked and is a good example of something you never want your name on or mentioned in. "Senator A" is probably Nome Senator Donnie Olson, a physician who also owns an air taxi company. I put that together on the mention in the indictment that Sen. A has airplanes and the co-conspirators see that as a way to get money to him. I know Olsen's records were subpoenaed. He's probably next. The question on everyone's lips is "Who is Senator B?," and most speculate that it is Ben Stevens, Ted's son. Judging by the very politically timed way this investigation has been run, we'll probably find that out just in time for it to have the maximum effect on the General Election.

MORNING UPDATE:
STEALTH PETITIONERS FILE SIGNATURES...but it's still a secret as to who funded it, who wrote it, and what special interests are behind it. The rumor on the street is that Mark Brewer helped put this secret constitutional re-write together with the Trial Lawyers and UAW. Does Obama support this kind of special interest gamesmanship? I think at best this is a "deform" set of amendments. Beware!

Posted at 1:35pm on Jul. 4, 2008 Jesse Helms: The Death Of A Patriot
By ICRJCalvin
Shortly after Jesse Helms was elected as a US Senator from North Carolina in 1972, a group of about 200 Republican and Democratic supporters were invited to have dinner with him in Raleigh. Upon his being introduced to speak, we gave Senator Helms a thunderous standing ovation. He responded in typical Jesse “manner” by saying, “There are only two reasons an audience gives a speaker a standing ovation at the beginning of his speech: One; they want to show appreciation to the speaker now because they don’t know if they will feel like it by the end of the speech. Two; they want to take an opportunity to stand and straighten their underwear. I noticed several people doing the latter.”

Posted at 10:15am on Jul. 4, 2008 Jesse Helms 1921-2008
By Ben Domenech
Jesse Helms, a warrior for the conservative cause, passed away this morning.
Jesse Helms was a controversial figure to the American left, but he was beloved by his colleagues and by many of his ideological foes. Madeleine Albright kissed and danced with him. Joe Biden loved him. Elizabeth Edwards said her husband was just like him. Helms considered Bono a personal friend.
Helms in person was very unlike the caricature the left painted of him. He was strongly opposed to the United Nations and what he saw as encroachment on American liberty, and yet was one of the first Republicans to endorse a strong worldwide foreign aid policy on AIDS relief. He never graduated from college, and never shook off his lower class upbringing, but through hard work and commitment earned the respect of his friends, his colleagues and even his enemies.
Ever a fighter against the encroachment of bureaucracy and ever-expanding big government, Helms was an old school conservative in that regard. Once, when facing the prospect of a government shutdown, he is supposed to have said to his colleagues: ""Every day these buildings are closed, the Republic grows stronger." And he certainly believed it.
He was a warrior and a patriot. The date of his death is fitting indeed.
RIP.

Posted at 3:16pm on Jun. 29, 2008 Don't Wait. McCain Should Pick VP Now.
By sandbox
The conventional wisdom holds that a Presidential nominee, who is not running for re-election, waits until just before their convention to name their Vice Presidential choice. I have read many reasons for this practice, but here’s why I think John McCain should name his VP choice now:
1. His age. As the oldest first term nominee ever, John McCain’s age will be an issue with some voters. I know that people are living longer and McCain does appear to be a relatively vigorous 71 years old. By designating his younger running mate now, he helps diffuse the age issue sooner rather than later. Voters start looking at the “team”, not just McCain. Further, because of McCain’s age, many voters will assume when they are looking at the VP designate, that this particular VP will have a greater likelihood of becoming President than is usually the case. So let’s give the voters a longer period (4 months instead of 2) to get to know and feel comfortable with this Vice President.
